Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin is a natural, biologically active, iron-binding glycoprotein made of a single polypeptide chain of 691 amino acids.

It is a key biological protein within the body and found in saliva, our tears, synovial fluid, white blood cells, our sweat and mother’s milk and has proven antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, iron regulating, skin healing and immunomodulatory activities.

We combined Lactoferrin (from cow’s milk) with L-Glutamine to create our Lactoferrin+ food supplement that supports the natural immune system, gut microbiome, oral and skin health.

GUT MICROBIOME (healthy gut = healthy skin) - Lactoferrin could be described as the ‘ideal probiotic’ and is considered the fire-starter of our gut microbiome when it is first introduced to infants in milk colostrum soon after birth. It supports a healthy gut microbiome, a vital part of our natural immune system, and will therefore support immunity and health (including skin health and condition) and has been clinically shown to reduce Leaky Gut Syndrome and benefit other gut related issues. Studies have shown that lactoferrin increased the growth rate (40-200%) of beneficial bacteria (such as Bifidobacterium bifidum, B. longum, B. lactis, B. infantis, Lactobacillus reuteri, L. rhamnosus and L. coryniformis).

IMMUNE SUPPORT - Lactoferrin plays a vital role within our natural immune system. It supports the immune system as an anti-bacterial (removing iron for pathogen & bacterial use) and anti-viral (binding with both virus spikes and human receptor cells), as well as supporting the gut microbiome and regulating the body's own immune cells (T-helper cells - balances Th1/Th2 cell activity), which is vital for an effective natural immune system and keeping our immune response balanced and in check.

SKIN HEALTH - Due to its anti-inflammatory, gut microbiome supporting and skin regenerating properties, Lactoferrin can help support skin health and condition in a number of ways:

CLEARER COMPLEXION -  Studies have shown that Lactoferrin can help reduce both acne lesion severity and count as well as associated inflammation, in addition to supporting the gut microbiome which additionally positively supports skin health and condition. It is shown to significantly reduce acne lesion count (by 38%) and decrease triacylglycerols in skin surface lipids (found in sebum) by 31.1%

CELL REGENERATION - Lactoferrin has been shown to support healing processes. One of the most outstanding abilities is its cell proliferation and the ability to stimulate cell regeneration by the release of specific cytokines, fibroblasts and keratinocytes. Studies show that wound healing in mucosal tissues, such as the oral mucosa, is boosted by treatment with lactoferrin.

INFLAMMATION (keeping immune response in check and skin calm) - Helps reduce redness and inflammation associated with skin conditions such as acne and eczema as it helps turn on and off the inflammation processes, ensuring the immune system stays in check.

IRON REGULATION (Iron regulation causing anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant activity) - Lactoferrin binds, releases, transports and regulates the absorption of iron, taking it to where it’s required within the body and helping prevent excess build up and successfully treats iron-deficiency in pregnancy. This activity also prevents the formation of potentially toxic hydroxyl radicals (free radicals) and the use of iron by pathogenic bacteria, making it also an anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant agent.

ANTI-BACTERIAL – Binds iron making it unavailable to pathogens and bacteria that need it for replication and catalysis.

ANTI-VIRAL – Lactoferrin works both in the first phase of infection by helping inhibit the entry of the virus into the cell through the nose and mouth (as it is present in nasel and throat liquids), and when the virus has already penetrated the cell. It acts as a first line of defence in the airways, eyes and nasal passages and on a cellular level within the body. It is digested and broken down by the enzyme pepsin in the stomach to lactoferricin, which is the key binding-molecule. Here it supports the immune system by binding directly with the ‘spikes’ of virus cells preventing them invading host cells, as well as binding directly onto the human cell receptors, preventing virus spread.

ANTI-OXIDANT - Excess iron can cause oxidative stress. Lactoferrin can help reduce oxidative stress by binding and removing iron, which prevents cell damage or cell death

GUT-MICROBIOME - The gut microbiome plays an important role within the natural immune system. Lactoferrin supports healthy gut bacteria.

How to Use Lactoferrin+?

Adults: For skin, oral & gut health: 1 capsule a day. For oral health, open capsule, mix with water and gargle before swallowing.

For immunity support: Preventative dose – 1 capsule, once a day, ideally during the winter months.

Loading Dose (from the first inkling you’re feeling run down) – 1 capsule, 3 times a day, until feeling yourself.

Suitable for children. Recommended dose 1 capsule opened and sprinkled onto food.
