Why your body oil should work while you sleep: melatonin, CBD and overnight skin repair

Most people think of a body oil as a moisturiser. Applied after a shower, absorbed into the skin, job done. But the body's relationship with sleep, repair and regeneration is significantly more interesting than that - and when you understand it, you start to see why what you apply before bed matters more than what you apply in the morning.

What happens to skin while you sleep

The skin is governed by a circadian rhythm, the same internal clock that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. Between roughly 11pm and 4am, skin cells enter a peak repair phase. Cell division accelerates. Collagen synthesis increases. The skin barrier actively regenerates. Cortisol, which suppresses repair processes during the day, drops to its lowest levels.

This is the window in which topical actives have the most opportunity. Skin is more permeable at night, blood flow to the surface is higher, and the biological machinery of repair is fully active. A body oil applied just before bed is not simply sitting on the surface: it is delivered into skin that is primed to receive and use it.1

Why melatonin belongs in a body oil

Melatonin is best known as the hormone that triggers sleep. But its role in skin goes considerably deeper than that. Melatonin is produced in skin cells independently of the brain, and functions there as a potent cellular antioxidant, a cell communicator, and a regulator of the skin's own nocturnal repair processes.

As a topical active, melatonin signals skin cells to switch on overnight regeneration and repair. It scavenges free radicals, protecting cells from the oxidative damage accumulated during the day from UV radiation, pollution and stress. It supports collagen-producing fibroblasts. And because it works in alignment with the skin's natural circadian rhythm rather than overriding it, it does not cause the irritation or adaptation period associated with other actives.2

This is also why melatonin features in OSKIA's Midnight Elixir, the brand's regenerative night serum for the face. The Deeper Sleep Body Oil extends the same principle to the body: topical melatonin applied in the evening works with the skin's own repair cycle, not against it.

The role of CBD

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant. In skincare, its primary value is anti-inflammatory: CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors in skin cells, helping to calm inflammation, reduce redness, and ease the kind of low-level tension that accumulates in skin and muscle throughout the day.

The OSKIA Deeper Sleep Body Oil uses CBD sourced from Italy. In the context of a body oil applied before sleep, CBD's ability to calm the nervous system and ease physical tension is directly relevant. It is not simply a topical active: it is part of the transition from wakefulness to rest. Clinical research on oral CBD and sleep has documented meaningful reductions in anxiety and improvements in sleep quality, and the topical calming effect supports the same direction of travel.3

The botanical oil complex

Beyond melatonin and CBD, the Deeper Sleep Body Oil contains a considered blend of nutrient-dense oils chosen for both skin and sensory function. Avocado oil is rich in oleic acid and vitamins A, D and E, and absorbs readily into the skin barrier without sitting heavily. Calendula has clinically documented anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Evening primrose provides gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid that supports the lipid barrier and calms reactive skin. Raspberry, strawberry and blueberry oils add antioxidant protection from UV and environmental damage.

Grape seed oil forms the lightweight base, absorbing quickly without greasiness. This is a body oil that conditions without coating.

The aromatherapy dimension

The scent of the Deeper Sleep Body Oil is deliberate: oud, lavender and frankincense. Lavender has been clinically shown to reduce heart rate, blood pressure and skin temperature, measurable physiological markers of relaxation.4 Frankincense has a grounding, meditative quality that supports the transition to rest. Oud adds depth and warmth. Together they create a sensory experience that supports sleep onset in its own right, while the actives work on the skin overnight.

OSKIA Deeper Sleep Body Oil: where it began

This oil was originally formulated for use in OSKIA's Deeper Sleep Body Treatment, available in OSKIA's spa partner network. The home version brings the same formula into an evening ritual that anyone can use. Apply after a bath or shower to slightly damp skin. Warm a small amount between the palms, take a few slow breaths over the cupped hands to draw in the fragrance, and massage into the skin in long, slow strokes. The ritual itself is part of the product's function.

Not suitable for use during pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I apply the Deeper Sleep Body Oil?

In the evening, after a bath or shower, applied to slightly damp skin. The warmth of the shower opens the skin and allows the oil to absorb more readily. Ideally, apply 20 to 30 minutes before bed.

Will it leave my skin feeling greasy?

No. The grape seed oil base absorbs cleanly. The oil softens and conditions without residue, which makes it suitable to apply and then go directly to bed without staining sheets.

Does the CBD in this oil have any psychoactive effect?

None. CBD (cannabidiol) is entirely distinct from THC and has no psychoactive properties. The CBD in the Deeper Sleep Body Oil is non-psychoactive and is present at 0.2mg/g in the formula.

Can I use this oil on my face?

It is formulated as a body oil. For the face, OSKIA's Midnight Elixir contains melatonin alongside biomimetic EGF and peptides and is the recommended evening facial treatment.

Is the Deeper Sleep Body Oil suitable during pregnancy?

This product is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the concentration of essential oils and the CBD content. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your midwife or GP before use.

What does 0.2mg/g CBD mean?

This refers to the concentration of cannabidiol in the formula. 0.2mg per gram of product is a cosmetic dose, formulated for topical use. It is the concentration used in the professional spa treatment version of this oil.
