Lactoferrin could be described as the ‘ideal probiotic’ and is considered the fire-starter of our gut microbiome when it is first introduced to infants in milk colostrum soon after birth. It is shown to significantly reduce acne lesion count (by 38%) and decrease triacylglycerols in skin surface lipids (found in sebum) by 31.1% 

CELL REGENERATION. Lactoferrin has been shown to support healing processes. One of the most outstanding abilities is its cell proliferation and the ability to stimulate cell regeneration by the release of specific cytokines, fibroblasts and keratinocytes. Studies show that wound healing in mucosal tissues, such as the oral mucosa, is boosted by treatment with lactoferrin.

ANTI-BACTERIAL – binds iron making it unavailable to pathogens and bacteria that need it for replication and catalysis.

ANTI-VIRAL – Lactoferrin works both in the first phase of infection by helping inhibit the entry of the virus into the cell through the nose and mouth (as it is present in nasel and throat liquids), and when the virus has already penetrated the cell. It acts as a first line of defence in the airways, eyes and nasal passages and on a cellular level within the body. It is digested and broken down by the enzyme pepsin in the stomach to lactoferricin, which is the key binding-molecule. Here it supports the immune system by binding directly with the ‘spikes’ of virus cells preventing them invading host cells, as well as binding directly onto the human cell receptors, preventing virus spread.

It is also a major source of fuel for enterocytes (intestinal cells) and therefore supports the digestive system. L-Glutamine is manufactured by microbiological fermentation.

How to use

Adults: For skin, oral & gut health: 1 capsule a day. For oral health, open capsule, mix with water and gargle before swallowing. For immunity support: Preventative dose – 1 capsule, once a day, ideally during the winter months. Loading Dose (from the first inkling you’re feeling run down) – 1 capsule, 3 times a day, until feeling yourself. Suitable for children. Recommended dose 1 capsule opened and sprinkled onto food.

Where is our Lactoferrin from?

We use Proferrin, a pure native lactoferrin purified from premium fresh cow milk farmed in Northern France. It is a spray-dried powder that contains more than 95% pure lactoferrin vs. protein. It is not denaturation, meaning it retains all of its natural potency and molecular properties.

Why use Cow Lactoferrin?

Human and cow lactoferrin are very similar. Human lactoferrin is a single polypeptide chain consisting of 691 amino acids, while cow lactoferrin is composed of 689 amino acids. However, the key role of binding lactoferrin to cells is due to a molecule called lactoferricin (which is formed when lactoferrin is broken down in the digestive system by the gut enzyme pepsin) which is almost identical in cow and human, meaning that cow lactoferrin is able to bind to the same receptors and cells as human lactoferrin.

Why is Lactoferrin so important?

Colostrum, the first milk produced after a baby is born, contains very high levels of lactoferrin, about seven times the amount found in milk produced later on and it is this that gives babies their first dose of immunity against immediate and latent pathogens, as well as kick-starting the gut microbiome, a vital part of the immune system. Of particular importance is its presence in nasal and throat fluids providing a first line of defence.
