Clinical trials
Numerous clinical trials, including double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, have been carried out proving the beneficial effect of MSM on collagen production. Additional research and clinical trials suggest that MSM aids the production of Hyaluronic acid, protects against inflammation and protects against collagen degrading enzymes, as presented by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, 8th April 2008: a new study presented at the Experimental Biology 2008 Annual Meeting.
There are numerous additional clinical trials illustrating MSM’s benefit to other ailments, from allergies and intestinal problems, to cancers. A study published in 1986 showed that MSM was "effective in the chemoprevention of ... mammary cancers." (Study by Dr. D. McCabe, Dr. P. O'Dwyer, Dr. B. Sickle-Santanello, Dr. E. Woltering, Dr. H. Abou-Issa and Dr. A. James, published in the Archives of Surgery, 12/1986)
Is MSM safe?
Yes. It is considered to be one of the safest substances in biology, similar in toxicity to water. MSM and its related compounds are the source of 85% of the sulphur found in all living organisms. In Ocular Irritancy tests, it has a classification of Minimal Irritant, a score of 0.00-12.5 on Irritection Draize Equivalent (IDE), the lowest score that can be achieved by any compound. Dermal Irritancy Results, MSM has a Human Irritancy Equivalent (HIE) score of 0.00 – 0.90, which is regarded as a non-irritant, again, the lowest score.
MSM should not be confused with other ingredients such as sulphites or sulphates, which are harmful derivatives of the sulphur family.
